Private prescriptions included with your consultation

We offer private prescriptions as part of your medical care.

The cost of your prescription is included in your consultation.

You pay the pharmacy separately for the cost of the medicine which may vary slightly between pharmacies.

No extra fee for private prescriptions during a consultation.

You only pay the consultation fee and your pharmacy charge.

Repeat private prescriptions

Repeat private prescriptions are available with clear safety rules.

These rules protect your health and ensure responsible prescribing.

  • Repeat prescriptions are only for medicines we have prescribed before.
  • We must hold a clear record of your previous prescription.
  • Regular reviews may still be needed for some long-term medicines.

This helps ensure your treatment stays safe and appropriate.

New medicines and first-time prescriptions

All new medicines require a GP consultation first.

This applies even if another doctor has prescribed them before.

During the consultation we will:

  • Review your medical history and current medicines carefully.
  • Check for allergies, interactions and possible side-effects.
  • Discuss benefits, risks and safer alternatives when appropriate.

Important: We also need proof you have taken the medicine before.

This is an extra safety step for your protection.

Proof required for new medicines

To prescribe a medicine that is new to our records, we need reasonable proof.

You can provide either of the following documents.

1. Empty medicine box

Please bring the empty medicine box to your consultation.

Your name and label must be clearly visible on the box.

The label should show your details and the medicine strength.

2. Previous prescription slip

You can also bring a previous prescription slip instead.

The slip should show your name and the medicine prescribed.

Photos may be accepted if the details are fully readable.

Without one of these, we may not be able to prescribe safely.

Why these rules are in place

These steps are designed to prioritise your safety and wellbeing.

They also support good medical practice and responsible prescribing.

  • They help prevent unsafe combinations of medicines and dosages.
  • They reduce the risk of misuse or inappropriate repeat supplies.
  • They ensure your treatment aligns with your full medical history.

What we can and cannot prescribe

We can usually help with many routine private prescriptions.

Examples may include common medicines for long-term conditions.

  • Blood pressure and cardiovascular medicines where appropriate.
  • Diabetes medicines, if safe and properly monitored.
  • HRT or contraception, with proper review and follow-up.
  • Treatments for common conditions like reflux or asthma.

We may not prescribe some controlled drugs or high-risk medicines. These decisions are always based on safety and clinical judgement.
